Can a fitness-focused activity like dieting transform into a tool of spirituality? Pujyashri Gurudev demystifies this through the Diet Abhiyaan series. Find out how you can maintain good health, discipline your mind and strengthen the spirit, all at once:

It is 7 a.m. Donning a punjabi suit and running shoes, Premarpit XYZben, 55 is seen taking a brisk walk on the Marine Drive promenade. Well, she in on a mind-body mission called the Diet Abhiyaan. Joining her, are scores of people from around the world who have embarked on this unique expedition to maintain an optimum body weight through a combination of food, exercise and lifestyle changes which shall in turn augment the capability for spiritual practice.

Flagged off by Pujyashri Gurudev of Shrimad Rajchandra Mission (Dharampur) in 2009, the Diet Abhiyaan is in its 4th avatar, this year. At the commencement of an Abhiyaan one commits to a certain kilograms of weight loss/gain that he intends to achieve to maintain a healthy life. This is accomplished by a blend of correct diet and adequate exercise. Daily measurements of progress, or lack of it, are taken by the mirror-on-the-wall test – the weighing scale. One accordingly adjusts his lifestyle to achieve the time-bound goal of dedicating the committed number of kilograms to Pujyashri Gurudev. Right through the past 3 Abhiyaans, a remarkable total of 3000 kgs were shed, globally.

Apart from the obvious benefits of outer wellbeing, the Abhiyaan leaves one with many lessons learnt in the spheres of spirituality, as propounded by Pujyashri Gurudev.

1. Necessity, the mother of invention:
A discomfort with your current state of health forces you to think of ways and means for attaining good health. A glaring paunch or a breathless climb up two stairs is evidence enough that it is time to act. So it is with spirituality. A realization that this material object cannot offer complete and lasting happiness drives one in search of true happiness, in the inner world.

2. A guide to light the path:
A guide to light the path: Knowing that one needs to shed a certain number on the kilogram board and not knowing how to, can become quite frustrating. One needs a dietician or guide to show the way. Someone who is fit himself, has mastered the intricacies of achieving good health, can gauge your capabilities and know what to prescribe to you and make you reach a rational goal in a rational time-span. Likewise, a Guru plays the role of a spiritual guide – having attained a state of divinity Himself, knowing the essence of scriptures on one hand and your needs, strengths and weaknesses on the other; he bestows you with the perfect guidance for your spiritual pursuits.

3. Staying on course, despite temptations:
Going on an Abhiyaan does not mean your cravings will always support your cause, they will revolt, often. That is only normal. You may be plagued with dreams of sweets and other taboo foods, but he key is to realize the harm you will cause to your goal if you convert don’t train the mind and succumb the temptations. Commencing on the spiritual path does not guarantee a thorn-less journey, at all. There will be times when one is lured into the tricks of the demanding and deceitful mind. Keep focus on the ultimate goal, always and you shall excel the obstacles.

4. The daily measurement:
Invariable to achieving eventual success is measuring the progress as you go along. Knowing how you are faring on a regular basis helps you to stay motivated, or re-align if necessary. The weighing scale is a true indicator of your progress or lack of it on the path to achieving wellbeing. Self-analysis and introspection helps you measure progress on the spiritual path. A time for daily, deep reflection aids one in knowing how much understanding has translated into positive action and encouraged a value-changing process.

5. Growing together:
Have you ever experienced the difference between watching a movie alone and doing so with friends? The experience becomes more enjoyable in the latter. There would be times when despite your best efforts you might find that the anticipated results just aren’t showing. This is the time when group spirit can motivate you. Someone who is cheerfully committed to sweat it out till the end can raise your spirits and get you back on track. Group spirit is very important in spirituality too. One learns from and gets inspired by others who endeavour to reach the same goal. Their trials and triumphs, follies and successes, rouse one to tread one’s own path. And, the company of like-minded people invariably rubs off its magic.

So, get inspired from Pujyashri Gurudev’s dedication and resolute ways. Don’t be afraid to commit to a diet or to your spiritual discipline. Nourish your physical and mental faculties and enhance your overall wellbeing.
